On a Mac,

System Preferences -->
    Printers & Scanners -->
        + [add] -->

and in the Add pop-up,

IP ( not Default ) -->
    Protocol = HP Jetdirect - Socket
    Queue    = (leave blank)

On Windows 7, for printers OTHER THAN xerox, do this once

control panel -->
    programs & features -->
        turn windows features on or off -->
            print & document services  -->
                LPR port monitor --> ON

and then for each interesting printer

control panel -->
    devices & printers -->
        add a printer -->
            add a local (!!) printer -->
                create a new port -->
                    an LPR port -->
                        name of server --> (see below)
                        name of print queue --> lp

For the xerox machines, instead copy PrintSetup.XXXX.exe
from \\\drivers to Desktop, and run it.

generic drivers

When a specific driver is lacking, you can get away with treating a printer as a superset of some older printer.

For example,

HP LaserJet 4050 (Mac or Windows)
Generic PostScript Printer (Mac)
Generic / MS Publisher Imagesetter (Windows)
